Ju Jutsu training 10-13-2006

What was covered?

Introduction, what is Japanese Ju Jutsu?

General order of events: Attack! -> Defend, regain or maintain safety, distract, take over and gain control over attacker!

Defend (defend against kick hit)
Safety (Move towards safer position, move out of attackers line)
Respond (Distract by inflicting pain using kicks/punches)
Take over (apply technique to force attacker into a desired position to gain control)
Control (apply technique to contol, hold down or move attacker)

Most Judo techniques are found in the ‘Take over’ and ‘Control’ stage

Explain training principles

During Ju Jutsu training we are simulating an attack and are simulating the defence against this attack! In order to train techniques safely and properly you and your partner need to respond to techniques as realistic as possible. For example in a real situation if a person is hit in the face/chest (assuming no lasting injury is induced) this person is likely to be temporarily disorientated, his/her attention is temporarily lost from the attack and his/her balance is usually backward. Similarly in a real situation if a person is hit below the chest (assuming no lasting injury is induced) this person is likely to be temporarily disorientated, his/her attention is temporarily lost from the attack and his/her balance is usually forward.

Since we don’t intend to hurt each other during training we need to simulate the effects of real attacks and real defence techniques. For example if my attacker grabs me firmly by the throat and I defend by hitting the attacker in the face my partner needs to put his balance relatively backward and allow the defender to say apply a technique on his arms.

Warming up

• Warming up, including introduction into the defence position, sideways roll, flying sideways roll, defence and counter against karate punches/kicks

Techniques 1

Various defence techniques that can be applied to frontal and side attacks like grabbing/hitting/choking/stabbing attacks, application of various frontal Judo throws

• Atack: Punch towards face. Responds: Outside defence, punch/kick, turn atacker to desired position using stretched arm lock (applying pressure on the elbow joint using the shoulder), as attacker turns stop him using an uppercut in the belly, attackers balance is now forward which is perfect for a forward throw (e.g. ipon-seonage)
• Control on the ground, turn opponent on belly, control using stretched arm lock.

Techniques 2

Various defence techniques that can be applied to frontal and side attacks like grabbing/hitting/choking/stabbing attacks, application of various Ju Jutsu joint locks

• Atack: Grab left shoulder. Responds: punch in the face (balance backward), pull arm (balanace forward), grab attackers wrist using right hand, left hand on attackers elbow, (force arm so that both wrist and arm are at 90 degrees to another) push elbow towards face, stretch arm apply pressure on elbow and remain pressure on wrist, force attacker to the ground
• Control on the ground, control using stretched arm lock.

• Idem, resistance, attacker moves upward (cause: you forget pressure on elbow or just a really drunk and strong guy), go back and apply hooked wrist lock, attackers drops to knees, turn right and stretch arm apply pressure on elbow and remain pressure on wrist, force attacker to the ground
• Control on the ground, control using stretched arm lock.

• Atack: Grab left shoulder. Responds: kick/punch, grab attackers wrist with both hands from underneath, pull arm to the top right forcing it into the start of a shoulder lock, place left arm elbow under attackers elbow, step inward, right foot first, then left foot, then turn right, the arm should now be bend next to the attackers neck, pull arm down forcing attacker to the ground,
• Control on the ground, keep pressure until the attacker is on the floor put your knee on his chest/armpit, face left behind your knee to prevent being hit. Also possible to apply wrist lock on the floor.

Grading - November 11th

There will be a grading in the National Training Centre in Finglas on November 11th. This will be open to everyone who wants to grade, including those going for yellow, orange and green belts. To facilitate the grading lower belts will have to be graded prior to the main grading, which will mean an early start. The National Training Centre is in the Leisure Point Sport & Fitness Centre on the Cardiffsbridge Road. We will probably be travelling over as a group the morning of the grading.

Irish Open Results

Where: Citywest Conference Centre

When: 14th October 2004

Who competed: Tony Gentles, John Deenihan, Kevin Lally, Conor Flanagan, Marc Galligan

How did it go: Our coach Tony made a very succesful return to competitive judo after a 12 year absence. He won a Silver Medal in the Masters Catergory, defeating UCDD's coach in the process. John also had a good day, just missing out on a bronze in the open weight catergory. This was especially impressive considering John only decided to enter on the day. Marc, the only non-black belt in the very tough under 73kg weight division, lost both his matches. Kevin and Conor both lost their first round matches in the under 81kg division. Conor won a match in the repechage before finally being knocked out.
